Huit mois durant, la caméra de Jean-Luc Cohen s’est fait oublier pour restituer les petits moments ordinaires du quotidien d’Emmanuel Poirier, délégué syndical à la SCR, filiale troyenne du groupe Eiffage. Avec un chiffre d’affaires de 35 milliards de francs, près de 30 000 ouvriers et 550 sociétés autonomes réparties dans l’Hexagone, le groupe Eiffage est l’un des plus grands du BTP français.
Comme un grand frère, tuteur d’une famille nombreuse, Emmanuel Poirier a pris en charge l’aspiration au mieux-être de tous ces ouvriers, craignant pour leur emploi, mais qui, fins de mois obligent, étouffent leur grogne. Au cœur de leurs doléances : la retraite à 55 ans et un salaire à la mesure de leur travail pénible… La préparation d’une grève et d’une manifestation nationale le 17 novembre 1997 à Paris a fourni au réalisateur le fil rouge de ce portrait d’un autre type.

Over a period of eight months Jean-Luc Cohen and his camera discreetly follow Emmanuel Poirier in his daily life. as a union representative of the S.C.R., (the Troyes subsidiary of the Eiffage organization). With a 35 billion franc turnover and about 30,000 workers and 550 independant companies spread out all over the country, Eiffage is one of the biggest in the French public building and work sector. Emmanuel Poirier decides to take the hesitant workforce under his brotherly wing and deal with the problems concerning their working terms and conditions. Their disgruntlement leads to demands for retirement at 55 and work – related wages. The preparation of a strike and a national protest on the 17th November 1997 in Paris supplies the film director with a vital lead for this unusual portrait.
